Embracing Slow & Sustainable

In News

How to incorporate sustainability into your everyday family life.

Balance. While many of us are looking to lead a more mindful life, trying to be present for our families, our kids, and our own peace of mind, in a fast-paced and ever-changing world, how do you slow down enough to know WHAT to do first, and even if what you do will have enough of an impact.

The question we need to ask ourselves is: Why are we trying to go so fast and what can we do to slow down enough so we have space to see what and where we can make choices as conscious parents to live more sustainably - for our family and the planet?

With so many modern world challenges in the world today, you can’t “do it all” and you can’t know what to do if you don’t allow yourself the space to first slow down yourself, allowing space and grace to let you intentionally move forward. Slow living, slow fashion, and sustainability can happen when we are connecting to the people around us and the planet that supports us.

Ultimately, sustainable living simply means making choices and developing habits that are good for your family, good for the environment, and good for your soul. Those choices include what you buy, consume, and focus on.

It starts with clarifying your family values, and then aligning your choices around those values.

As consumers, we do have a choice. A choice to be informed and to demonstrate our values and vision for an unpolluted and healthy planet for our children, through our individual choices - starting with our choices in clothing.

For us here at Nui, we are passionate about the environment. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, ozone depletion, a floating continent of plastic in the pacific ocean are realities of current and future generations. A tiny piece of microplastic in the ocean can be one million times more toxic than the ocean water around it, as it absorbs toxic chemicals like PCBs and DDTs—chemicals linked to endocrine disruption and even cancer.

Nui Organics is a company based on a foundation of sustainable values. By choosing natural, organic, renewable, and biodegradable fibers like merino wool, you buy premium quality natural clothing that respects the environment, won’t bleed microplastics into the ocean, and is the safest and most comfortable clothing for your family.

We could talk all day about our love, organic merino wool, and it’s many benefits, but we know knowledge is not as powerful as action you can take in your daily life that leads to lasting change.

By being more intentional with your choices and your own self care, you will actually WANT to make more conscious and earth-friendly decisions that lower your family’s carbon footprint.

Self care is about doing things that nurture your own peace of mind. As parents, it’s easy to want to give all of your attention to your kids and family. But when you are depleted and spent, you are doing everyone a disservice.

Creating “space” is a daily practice. It will give you more internal peace of mind, the ability to be more present for your children, and teach them how to be more conscious in their own lives. Children learn by example. And we couldn’t think of a better excuse to practice it.

A few tips to help you embrace slow living as a conscious parent:

  • Define what is most important to you - family, activities, items, emotions.
  • Say no to everything else!
  • Practice being present in the moment.
  • Practice deep breathing. Six deep breathes are enough to reset your parasympathetic nervous system, and you can do them anywhere.
  • Go for a walk in nature - with or without your kids, no technology allowed.
  • Be intentional with social media. It's filled with other people’s priorities.
  • Wake up before everyone else to gain time for yourself (even if you have to pretend to still be asleep). Just lay in bed with your eyes closed and set your day’s intentions).
  • ALLOW yourself to slow down. Busy and busyness are two different things.
  • Surround yourself with a community (like our #nuiworld!) that supports the life you want to create.

Our children are a perfect way to hold ourselves accountable to a more sustainable lifestyle. Sustainability, after all, is not just about the environment or fashion, it’s about intentionally doing things that are able to be sustained over a long period of time.

Whether that is buying less and buying better quality - food, fashion, products; sustainable choices - sustainable is not about perfection. It is about doing what is best for your child and your family.

Incorporating mindful practices for and with your kids helps make learning and practicing sustainability a family activity. A few ideas include:

Teach Your Kids About The Planet and Environment.

Help your kids understand the importance of wearing natural fiber clothing, reducing their carbon footprint, and how caring for their clothing and toys help the environment. The more they know WHY things matter, the more they will feel empowered to do something about it as they get older.

Take Daily Walks In Nature

Research shows that the more time children spend in nature, the more they learn compassion for themselves and the world around them. Getting outside everyday with your children not only allows space for family bonding, but is good for both of your souls. The more that kids love nature, the more dedicated they’ll be to helping to preserve the world.

Talk About Recycling as an Everyday Occurance

Talk with your kids about the importance of recycling, and how it can help to minimize our impact on the environment. Explain why you use a reusable water bottle or bring reusable shopping bags to the grocery store with you.

Lead By Example

You are a role model for your kids, so when you take time to care about the clothes you buy, recycling, slowing down, self care, and eco-friendly practices, you are setting a great example for your kids while doing things that are actually good for you too.

Slow living and slow fashion actually got it roots around the concept of slow food. The opposite of fast food, it was a concept that focused on slowing down enough to enjoy quality food, people, and good conversation.

Slow fashion and slow living is a return to NATURAL and SUSTAINABLE. Natural is not trendy, it’s conscious and sustainable. Slow fashion is about premium quality organic, natural fibers and renewable fibers, buying less, choosing styles that last, and caring about the impact of your choices.

Buy buying better quality, you are not just investing in quality clothing, you are investing in your family’s future. It’s these small decisions that over time, result in big impact. An impact on your family and quality of life, and an impact to the planet and the people around you.

Climate change, deforestation, pollution, ozone depletion, a floating continent of plastic in the pacific ocean are realities of current and future generations. At Nui, every single one of our decisions, acts and purchases as brands and as consumers really does make a difference now.

As a fashion brand, we know every choice matters, so we source the most environmentally friendly options, develop new ones, design for growth and encourage our customers to buy less, not more. It’s not always the easiest option but it feels good and right.

In Maori, the native language of New Zealand, nui means big or important hence the name Nui Organics. Because a clean start is a big thing for a little person. We are inspired by our beautiful natural landscape and the world we live in.

Putting people and the planet first. Our planet. We care.
